James Cameron Collin was born in the town of Sellicks Hill, in South Australia. His occupation before enlisting in the war was a miner. James lived in Gumeracha; Adelaide Hills in South Australia located 47 minutes from Adelaide. James enlisted on the 21st of June 1916 to the 9th Light Horse Regiment and embarked later from Adelaide on January 16th, 1917, and fought in Moascar and Jerusalem during the war.

Whilst serving in the war James Colin Cameron was transported to the hospital on October 30th for an unspecified reason, shortly after 10 days sick in the hospital, James rejoined the 9th Light Horse Regiment on November 9th. 

He got into trouble 23rd May 1918 for disobeying an order and lost one day's pay as a punishment. He returned to Australia on the 10th of July in 1919.
