Francis John Virgil Bohan was born on 22 October 1894 in Gympie, Queensland, to John Shannon Bohan and Bridget Mary O’Mara.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force at Brisbane, Queensland, on 5 April 1917, aged 22, stating his occupation as clerk and naming his father as his next of kin. He embarked for overseas service from Brisbane aboard HMAT Wandilla (A62) on 31 January 1916.

He was wounded in action in France on 11 August 1918, receiving gunshot wounds to the back and face, and transferred to England for treatment and convalescence. He returned to Australia in January 1919 and was discharged from the AIF on 18 April 1919.

Following his return, Francis lived in Brisbane, working as a clerk in the public service. On 29 September 1937, he married Mary Ellen Redmond, and they made their home in Brisbane. They had no children.

Private Francis John Virgil Bohan died on 20 July 1961, aged 66, and was buried the following day in Anzac Portion 9, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.

After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name will be remembered among those who served with duty and sacrifice. His identity has been restored.

We have remembered him.

Lest We Forget.
