Son of John Munney Oakman and Selina Ellen Oakman of Humula, NSW later of Kyeamba, NSW.

Brother of Reuben Munney Thornet Oakman who was killed in action on 3 May 1917 while serving with the 17th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial: Elmore Bruce who returned to Australia on 25 July 1919 having served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment.

Husband of Georgina Anderson Oakman nee Evans of 'Willow Flats', Wallan, Victoria. Athol and Georgina married during 1916c in Victoria
