Born at Walgett, NSW on 28th November 1894, is the son of Mr and Mrs Gustavus FERRIF, of Lane Cove Road, North Sydney, and grandson of the late Henry and Mrs. SMITH of West Street. He received his education at St. Leonards Superior Public School, under Mr. Greenwood, and was afterwards engaged at Central Wharf, Sydney. His chief interest beyond the sphere of his ordinary duties was centre in ambulance work.
For some years he was on the staff of the North Sydney Brnach of the St. John Ambulance. In 1914 he gained his First Aid and Home Nursing Certificates, and two years later obtained his Medallion. He has also been awarded a Gold Medal for life-saving at Clifton Gardens, for which a public subscription list has headed by admiring witnesses of the brave resuce, and his untiring and eminetly successful efforts at restoration.
Enlisting in the 10th Battalion, he went into camp at Liverpool in October 1916, where he was made Acting Quartermaster-Sergeant while awaiting his transfer to the Army Medical Corps. On November 11th, 1916, he sailed in the 'Suevic' as stretcher-Bearer to be transferred to the Staff of the Base Hospital in England.
