Biography

James Ormonde was born in Muckunda  (place no longer exists) near Middleton, Qld. He enlisted alongside his younger brother and older cousin in Cloncurry, Qld on the same day - 6/4/1916. James was 20 years old when he enlisted. Both brothers were in the same Battalion 9th/20th Reinforcement in Belgium.  On 1/10/1917, he was wounded in action in Ypres, Belgium.  He suffered a shell injury to his left forearm.  Just 19 days later, his brother, Patrick Joseph Ormonde was killed in action at age 20 at Polygon Wood, Ypres, Belgium. His father sent 4 lots of correspondence to the Army administration querying if James was seriously injured and when he would return to Australia. James arrived back some time after March 1919.  He lived until 1974.
