Died on this date – 5th January…… Harry Bartrop Luckey was born on 16th September, 1888 at Birchanger, Essex, England.

He was listed as a passenger on “Omrah” which departed from London, England on 22nd July, 1910 bound for Australia.

Harry Luckey enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) in Western Australia on 7th August, 1915 as a 26 year old, single, Farm Labourer.

Private Harry Luckey embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia on HMAT Benalla (A24) on 1st November, 1915 with the 16th Infantry Battalion, 11th Reinforcements.

On 1st March, 1916 he was admitted to No. 1 General Hospital at Cairo, Egypt with Enteric. He was transferred to No. 1 Australian General Hospital at Zeitoun on 5th March, 1916 & admitted with Influenza. He was discharged to duty on 14th March, 1916.

Private Luckey was transferred to 5th Divisional Artillery on 1st April, 1916 & taken on strength of 25th Howitzer Brigade at Moascar on 1st April, 1916 & posted as Gunner to 113th Battery.
He was sent to Hospital at Ferry Post on 17th April, 1916 with Debility then transferred & admitted to No. 3 Australian General Hospital at Abbassia on 20th April, 1916 with Debility.

A Medical Report was completed on Gunner Harry Luckey at 3rd Australian General Hospital Abassia, Egypt. His disability was listed as Diabetes Mellitus which originated in middle of February, 1916 while posted at Zeitoun. Gunner Luckey had been operated on a year before enlisting & had recovered but in February he had pains in left groin which ran down his leg. He also had difficulty swallowing & had Influenza symptoms. Gunner Luckey’s disability was reported to be caused from active service & the effects of stress of active service. The Medical Officer in charge of the case recommended that Gunner Luckey be discharged as permanently unfit. The recommendation was approved by Headquarters D.M.S., A.I.F. in 8th May, 1916.

On 11th May, 1916 Gunner Harry Luckey embarked from Suez on H.T. Kanowna for Australia. He was discharged from Australian Imperial Force - 5th Military District on 9th December, 1916 due to Incapacity.

Harry Luckey was admitted to No. 8 Australian General Hospital, Fremantle, Western Australia on 10th December, 1916 with Diabetes. He was discharged on 30th March, 1917 to proceed to England on Hospital Ship Kanowna as an “Indulgence Passenger.”

Ex-Gunner Harry Luckey died on 5th January, 1918 in Guy’s Hospital, England of Diabetes.

Harry Bartrop Luckey was buried on 9th January, 1918 in St. Mary’s Churchyard, Birchanger, Essex, England and is included on his parents’ private headstone. His death is still acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
