James (Jim) Kelly was born in Manoora, South Australia on the 15th April 1883 to Micheal and Elizebeth Kelly. One of eleven children, he became a miner by trade. He worked around Booborowie, where his family lived. He later worked on the west coast of south Australia and at Broken hill, New South Wales, as did several of his brothers who were also miners.
He enlisted as a Private in the 43rd Battalion AIF on 24th March 1916 and served as a machine gunner in both France and Belgium. He fought at Messines, Warneton, Ypres, Villers-Bretonneux, Hamel and Amiens
Three of James other brothers also fought in WW1. Francis, Denis and Eugene. Francis and Eugene were both killed in action.
After the war he worked for the Post Master General's department in Murray Bridge, South Australia.
