James (Jim) Kelly was born in Manoora, South Australia on the 15th April 1883 to Micheal and Elizebeth Kelly. One of eleven children, he became a miner by trade. He worked around Booborowie, where his family lived. He later worked on the west coast of south Australia and at Broken hill, New South Wales, as did several of his brothers who were also miners.
