Ogilvie Brown Paterson came out to Australia from Scotland in 1905, at about 20 years of age. He seemed to have started a grocery business in Bundaberg. He enlisted as a Lieutenant.
He was killed in action on 29 July 1916, several Red Cross reports stated he was mortally wounded in the head, probably by a piece of shell shrpanel.
He was reported as missing on this date, and was not confirmed as killed in action until 3 September 1917, 14 months later. His body was not recovered and he was to be listed on the memorial at Villers-Bretonneux in France.
His remains were discovered during 1936, however this information did not appear to reach Australia until 1938. His identity was confirmed by the presence of his identity disc with his remains. The disc was forwarded to his brother in Queensland, John William Paterson, who was also a returned AIF soldier.
Paterson was reinterred in the London Cemetery and Extension, Longueval, Picardie, France.
