Biography contributed by John Oakes

Archibald MCDONALD (Service Number 1791) was born about December 1893 on Palmers Island in the Clarence River in northern NSW.

He worked in the NSW Tramways Electrical Branch.

At the time of his enlistment at Liverpool on 30th January 1915 his father was dead, and he was unmarried. He gave his mother, Flora, who was living in Burwood, Sydney, as his next of kin.

He embarked HMAT ‘Argyllshire’ at Sydney on 10th April 1915, and after a brief, passage through Egypt, reached Gallipoli on 26th May when he was taken on the strength of the 2nd Battalion. In July he was sent to the Field Ambulance, sick, and he is noted as re-joining his unit on 2nd August 1915.

He was wounded badly in his left thigh during the Battle of Lone Pine on 8th August 1915. He was evacuated to His Majesty’s Hospital Ship ‘Delta’. He died there on 11th August 1915 and was buried at sea. As is the practice for those buried at sea, he is remembered on the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.

A pension of £39 per annum was granted to his widowed mother.
