Born at Camusterrach (Scottish Gaelic: Camas Tearach), a remote hamlet, situated on the west coast of Scotland, on the Applecross peninsula, in Strathcarron, west Ross-shire, Scottish Highlands.

He is one of two Australian casualties of the Great War remembered on the Applecross War Memorial.

He was 32.
