George Edwin Hughes was born in Melbourne, Victoria and was a cigar maker. He enlisted on the 14/2/1916 but enlisted as William Richard Hughes not Geroge Edwin. He embarked from Beltana, Sydney on the 13/5/1916. He was in the 36th infantry batallion and the 55th infantry batallion, and his service number was 777.
On the 24th of June, 1917, a letter was sent home to his mum advising her that he had been wounded. He had a severe shrapnel wound to the thigh and was in the 2nd Redcross hospital but once treated he returned to duty. He survived the wound and the war war and on the 31st of March 1919 George Edwin Hughes was discharged.
However on the 9th of January 1961 he was still involved with the army because as he enlisted with a different name he wasnt discharged yet. Both him and his mother had to send confirmation and apology letters to allow him to be officially discharged.
George died on the 26th of March 1975 of natural causes.
