Daniel was born in 1886 in Scotland to Bridget Welsh (born 1866 in Ireland and working as an Agricultural Labourer in Scotland when Danile was born). Bridget married Francis (Frank) McManus (born 1867 in Dalkeith, Scotland) in 1895 when Daniel was 9 years of age. They had six children. Frank started work as an Agricultural Labourer at 14 years of age, and by 1891 was a Coal Miner in Scotland. He and Bridget emigrated to QUeensland, Australia in 1923, where Frank was a Labourer in Ipswich, QLD

Daniel had arrived in Ipswich, QLD by 1910 and was working as a Coal Miner when he enlisted in 1916 in the AIF with the Mining Corps, May Reinforcements 2nd Tunneling Coy as a Sapper (Service No: 7806) He was gassed in France in 1918

Daniel continued to live in Ipswich following his Discharge,and worked as a Miner until his death in 1959.

In 1928 Daniel married Dorothea Amelia Margaret Kimpton Wakelin, and following her death in 1936, he remarried Margaret MacIntosh in 1941 in Ipswich, QLD
