Biography contributed by John Edwards

"OBITUARY. HAROLD DUDLEY GADEN LOWE

As briefly reported in the last issue of the "Western Herald," the death occurred very suddenly in Armidale on the 20th May, 1955, of Mr. Harold Dudley Gaden Lowe. The deceased had attended the wedding of his niece, Miss Virginia Lowe, daughter of the late Edgar Lowe, and was making a speech at the reception, which was being held at the Tattersall's Hotel, when he collapsed and died instantly. Mr. Lowe was the third and youngest son of the late Fredrick Charles and Eileen Florence Lowe, of Wellington where he was born 64 years ago. In 1906 he left his home town and came to the Barton family as a jackeroo, on their property near Angledool. Later in 1920, when the family property at Wellington was sold, the three brothers, Fredrick Charles, Edgar and the deceased, purchased a property at Caulfield in Queensland. It was from Caulfield that he enlisted in the 12th Light Horse at the commencement of World War I. On Gallipoli he received facial wounds and was shot through the neck and was invalided to Malta. Here he transferred to the 6th Light Horse to be with his two brothers. During the fighting in Palestine he was again wounded, this time through the chest and he was invalided home. After two and a half years in hospital he was discharged, but his injuries left him with a permanent disability.

Mr. Lowe came to Brewarrina in 1922, when the partnership with his brothers at Caulfield was dissolved, and purchased Wilbertree Station, at Tarcoon. On the death of his brother, Frederick, in 1946, the deceased was joined by the widow of his brother and her two children, Fred and Nan. The deceased was always a mn who was highly respected by men in all walks of life and his support and generosity towards all local charities will always be remembered. A very keen follower of the sporting and social life of the district and town, his presence will be missed by his very large circle of friends. During his life time Mr. Lowe took an active part on the various racing bdies in the community and he was a keen cricketer for the Tarcoon district. His sad and sudden passing will be greatly grieved and the sympathy of our citizens is extended to the members of the Lowe family at "Wilbertree." The body was taken to Wellington, where it was laid to rest in the family plot in the Church of England portion of the general cemetery. Archdeacon Graham reading the last sad rites at the graveside." - from the Bourke Western Herald 03 Jun 1955 (nla.gov.au)
