Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

98 years ago today, on the Saturday afternoon of the 21st April 1923 (2 funerals on this day), Private Frederick William Morris, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-3152), tram conductor from 31 and 25 Perkins Street, Newcastle, New South Wales, was laid to rest with a military funeral at Sandgate Cemetery, age 34. ANGLICAN 1-81. 30.

Born at Newcastle, England on the 4th August 1888 to Francis (Frank) and Henrietta (Ettie) Morris, Frederick enlisted May 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 18.5.1918 (fractured finger, GSW left hand, mild), 4.1.1919 (influenza), Frederick was invalided home May 1919, being discharged on the 21st July 1919.

Mr Morris’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle District Tramway Employees Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled on the 30th September 1916, 70 names now inscribed). Name not inscribed on the NSW Govt Railways and Tramways Roll of Honour, 1914-1919.
There is no indication inscribed on Frederick’s headstone of his service with the 1st A.I.F., so I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label in remembrance of his sacrifice for King and Empire. ANGLICAN 1-81. 30.

I will be submitting an application to DVA requesting a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite.
Lest We Forget.
