Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
81 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 2nd September 1942, Private Thomas Wright, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-4220C), labourer from Hannell Street, Wickham, New South Wales and 17A Hunter Street, Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 72. ANGLICAN 3-162. 15. Not married.
Born at Sydney, New South Wales on the 16th May 1870 to Thomas and Margaret Wright, Tom enlisted on the 17th April 1917 (aged nearly 47!) at Newcastle, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 16th June 1917.
No wounds or illness during service.
Tom returned home on the 2nd September 1919, being discharged on the 2nd October 1919.
Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.
Mr. Wright’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name has not been inscribed on the Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board 1 or 2.
I have placed poppies at Tom’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
Not officially commemorated.
