Charles Johnson served at Gallipoli from October 1915. He was subsequently three times wounded in France from 1916 to 1918, being sent home at the end of 1918 with a gunshot wound to the foot.

His older brother 2193 Pte. Harmond Henry Johnson 49th Battalion AIF, was killed in action at Messines during June 1917.

They were the sons of Horatio Edward Johnson, Tweed River, New South Wales, their mother Sarah had passed away during 1908.
