Died on this date – 27th May…… Private James Love was born at Newey Creek, Nambucca River, New South Wales on 23rd May, 1898.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 29th January, 1916 stating he was an 18 year old, single, Labourer from Newey Creek, Macksville, NSW. James Love was only 17 years old when he enlisted.

As he was under the age of 21 his parents were required to sign their consent for their son to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force for Active Service abroad. W. Love (father) & E. Love (mother) signed the Application to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force form. (Note: James Love’s signature looks very similar to that of his parents’ signatures.)

On 13th May, 1916 Private James Love embarked from Sydney, NSW on HMAT Beltana (A72) with the 9th Infantry Brigade, 36th Infantry Battalion, “D” Company.

Private James Love died on 27th May, 1916 at Sea on board HMAT Beltana (A72) from Double Pneumonia following Measles. He died 4 days after his 18th birthday.

He was buried at Sea on 27th May, 1916. He is commemorated on the Hollybrook Memorial, Southampton, Hampshire, England as he has no grave. His death is acknowledged by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
