William fought at the Battle of Messines on 7 June 1917. In the Red Cross files, he gave evidence for mate’s death.
Informant; 1136 Private William Naomi Hall, ‘We had just reached our objective during the battle of Messines when Private: 1276 Hampton Willis was shot by a sniper. I saw him carried out and did not see him again. He and I were snipers to the Battalion and used to work together.’
William himself was buried by shell fire on several occasions during the battle and was evacuated with concussion.
William returned to Australia on the 31st October 1917 suffering from shell shock and continued treatment at the No:4 Australian General Hospital at Randwick, N.S.W. He had his War Pension Claim rejected on the 25th of April 1918 and married Kate Hall during August 1918. He was still being treated when he died in a Sydney hospital from injuries received by jumping from a window on 26 September 1918. He was buried in the Manilla Cemetery. He is not remembered on any other memorial.
Two brothers also served: 430 Pte Colin David Hall, 33rd Battalion, killed in action 12 October 1917; 2nd Lieutenant Alfred Claude Hall, 10th Field Artillery Brigade, returned to Australia, 30 January 1918.
