Leslie John Edward Schumacher
Leslie Schumacher was the tenth child raised by Johann Christian and Catharina Fredericka Schumacher. He was born on 2/6/1890, possibly in Glen Innes. He was probably Johann and Catharina's grandson. His mother was most likely his 'sister' Sophia Margaret Schumacher. Sophia married Edwin Matthews on 15/9/1896 and Edwin was probably Leslie's father. Leslie grew up in Emmaville and Tent Hill NSW. He married Margaret Greenhalgh-Johnson on 31/8/1914 at Quetta Memorial Cathedral on Thursday Island. Prior to the war they lived in Burwood NSW. In 1945 they announced their 31st wedding anniversary in the WA newspaper and by then were living at 239 Adelaide Terrace, Perth. They had one daughter Joy who was born on 12/4/23. Joy married but didn't have children. Leslie died in 1962. Leslie was the only Schumacher of his 4 brothers and various male cousins who is known to have served Australia in WW1. Little family history exists of his service. It is thought he served with the 1st Scottish Rifles for about 5 years before he then joined the O' Siege Brigade (Royal Garrison Artillery) on 1st May 1916.
