Enlisted at age 15 years and 10 months - when his age was discovered in 1918 John was returned to Australia, but not before seeing action in France and suffering wounds in battle.
John had two brothers who also enlisted, 6612 Spr David Randall (/explore/people/205421) died of wounds in Belgium 27 Oct 1917 and 3958 Pte. Ernest Stanley Randall (/explore/people/280674) who joined on 29 May 1915 and survived the war, being discharged on 10 Jan 1920
