Ernest had two brothers who also enlisted, 6612 Spr David Randall (/explore/people/205421) died of wounds in Belgium 27 Oct 1917 and 951 Pte. John Randall (/explore/people/258670) who joined on 18 Mar 1916 but was returned to Australia in 1918 when his underage status was discovered (he enlisted aged 15 years and 10 months).

Ernest's parents were George Randall and Louisa Marshall. Ernest was working as a labourer when he enlisted on 25 September 1915. His unit embarked 31 January 1916 from Brisbane on board A62 HMAT Wandilla. After the war Ernest lived at Samsonvale with his Parents and brother William, he worked as a labourer. Two of Ernest's brothers enlisted, David Richard [6612] and John [951], David was killed.
