Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Arthur’s father was of German ancestry and had passed away in 1898 when Arthur was about 17 years of age (original surname was Romesch). His mother was Mrs. Priscilla Rometch, and he was a brother of Mr. George Rometch of Webster, Rometch Ltd., Hobart. Arthur was a single man, and prior to enlisting was apparently involved in the family coaching business.

His brother, 2930 Pte. Frank Rudolph Rometch 20th Battalion AIF (served as Frank Henry Ward) had been killed in action on 2 January 1917, aged 36.

Arthur was killed in action 13th October 1917 at Passchendaele Belgium whilst stretcher bearing and is commemorated in the Tyne Cot Cemetery, Belgium. Reported missing in 1917 his remains were found in 1920 and identified by a receipt in his possession.

An eye witness to his death stated "I saw him killed at Ypres. We were stretcher-bearing and a shell landed amongst us which killed him instantly. I was wounded soon afterwards myself while endeavouring to get in a wounded man and I do not know the place of burial."
