Son of Charles Vandenbergh and Minnie Rebecca Vandenbergh of Arthur Street, North Sydney, NSW. Brother of Walter Cecil Vandenbergh who returned to Australia on 25 October 1917 having served with the 3rd  Battalion.

Commenced return to Australia on 28 March 1919 aboard HT Port MacQuarie disembarking on 27 May 1919
