Biography contributed by John Oakes

George LENAN (Service Number 406) was born on 15th July 1890 at Evansford near Ballarat, Victoria. He first worked for the NSW Tramways as a casual conductor in Sydney from 9th December 1911. The next year he became permanent.

On 11th October 1914 hewas released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

Lenan had enlisted at Rosehill a fortnight earlier, giving his ‘trade or calling’ as ‘Tramway’. He nominated his father, Michael, who was still living in Evansford as his next of kin. He was allotted to the 13th Australian Infantry Battalion. He embarked on HMAT ‘Ulysses’ at Melbourne and left Australia on 22nd December 1914. At some stage Lenan was promoted to Lance Corporal. After further training he embarked at Alexandria for passage to Gallipoli where he landed on Anzac Day or soon after.

Lenan was killed in action at Gallipoli on 29th May 1915. He was buried in Shrapnel Valley Cemetery, Anzac, which is about 400 yards SE of Anzac Cove. The chaplain was Rev Power.

Lenan’s parents  wrote to their local member, Sir A J Peacock, the Premier of Victoria, expecting that his authority would goad the military into giving details of his death. Even the Premier could not obtain any details.

As a result of his service his mother, Margaret, was granted a pension of £2 per fortnight.
