Award Citation for Military Medal: 'Marked coolness and determination while in charge of Platoon, setting fine example and rendering valuable services'.

'On the morning of the 9th May 1917 while the 8th Battalion were bombing down the trench on the right of Bullecourt, France, the N.C.O. was ordered to try and put some rifle grenades into the German sector of the trench which was about 200 yards in front. This was done but the grenades fell short by about 80 yards. Corporal HUNGERFORD gathered a number of rifle grenades and in spite of German snipers, who were very active, advanced to a shell hole in No Mans Land. He then fired grenades into the German bombing party with great success. The Germans ceased bombing and started to bomb along their own trench, thinking no doubt that they were taken in rear. Cpl. HUNGERFORD was subsequently called upon to take charge of his platoon and in spite of a very heavy bombardment carried out his duties with marked coolness and determination and set a fine example to his platoon which had suffered severe casualties.'
