Died on this date – 10th March…… Daniel Davitt Donnelly (middle name as per Victorian BD&M) was born on 18th May, 1895 at Ararat, Victoria.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 27th August, 1917 as a 22 year old, single, Labourer from Adelaide, Sth Australia.

Private Daniel David Donnelly (middle name as per Attestation Papers) was admitted to No. 7 Australian General Hospital from 15th to 25th September, 1917 with “Lysol” Poisoning, which he drank “3 parts of a bottle of Lysol in mistake for beer.” He was transferred to No. 17 Auxiliary Hospital on 25th September, 1917 & discharged on 1st October, 1917.

On 30th October, 1917 Private Donnelly, Service number 7479, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Aeneas (A60) & disembarked at Devonport, England on 27th December, 1917.

Reinforcements were only given basic training in Australia. Training was completed in training units in England. Some of these were located in the Salisbury Plain & surrounding areas in the county of Wiltshire.

He was marched in to 2nd Training Battalion at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on 27th December, 1917.

Private Donnelly was absent without leave from midnight 29th January, 1918 till 4 p.m. on 30th January, 1918. He was fined a total forfeiture of 4 days pay.

On 8th March, 1918 Private Donnelly was admitted to the Group Clearing Hospital then transferred & admitted to Military Hospital at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire on same day with Influenza.

Private Daniel David Donnelly died on 10th March, 1918 at the Military Hospital, Sutton Veny of Pneumonia.

He was buried in St. John the Evangelist Churchyard, Sutton Veny, Wiltshire, England where 140 other WW1 Australian War Graves & 2 Australian WW1 Nurses are located.
