Hermies lies in open rolling country and was a fiercely defended town surrounded by wire entanglements. The task of capturing Hermies fell to the 2nd and 3rd Battalions of the 1st Division. They attacked under cover of darkness and commencing the attack in the early hours of 9 April 1917. They immediately came under heavy machine gun and rifle fire and Private Lloyd was seen to be killed instantly by multiple bullet wounds shortly after the start of the advance. The attack was a success as the Australians fought their way through Hermies during the daylight hours gradually eliminating the many German machine gun posts until all the defenders of Hermies were either killed or captured.
