In WW1, John enlisted with the AIF in April 1915, and served at Gallipoli and in France. He was wounded at Gallipoli in August and suffered from trench fever, influenza and shell shock while in France. He disembarked in Australia in May 1919.
During WW2, John served in the 19th (VIC) Battalion Volunteer Defence Corps (VDC) between March 1942 and August 1945.
