Alexander Kemp was a young Englishman who came to Australia at the age of 18 during 1913. He enlisted with the 4th Battalion but transferred to the 56th Battalion during the reorganisation of the AIF in early 1916. He fought at Fromelles and was badly wounded in the thigh. He rejoined his unit six weeks later and was appointed a Lance Corporal during early 1917. He was again wounded at the Battle of Polygon Wood in Belgium 26 September 1917, with shrapnel wounds to the neck, chest and head. He was evacuated to England for treatment. He was sent back to France during February 1918 and after attending Brigade School for a couple of weeks, was killed in action August 1918. He made his will to his mother in England.
