"...7003 Private John Harmon Ireland. A builder’s foreman from Kooyong, Victoria prior to enlistment, Pte Ireland embarked with the 23rd Reinforcements, 8th Battalion from Melbourne on HMAT Hororata on 23 November 1916. Later promoted to Acting Sergeant while in England, he was admitted to hospital suffering from bronchitis. Following his recovery he reverted to the rank of Private and rejoined his battalion in France. Subsequently diagnosed as suffering from neurasthenia, he returned to Australia on 6 June 1918 and was medically discharged..." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
