An Original Anzac who served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
60 years ago today, on the 14th July 1964, Private Henry Huntington Winley, 2nd Australian Machine Gun Battalion (Reg No-698), miner from 36 Selwyn Street, Merewether, N.S.W. and King Street, Adamstown, N.S.W. (1923), father of at least three (very sad), Frances A. O., born 1921, died?, and Kenneth Edwin, born 1922, died 9.12.1923, 14 months old, Merewether, N.S.W., a Bud in Heaven, and Henry Huntington, born April 1920?, died 5.11.1920, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 7 months, a Bud in Heaven, sleeping same location, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 71. GENERAL-17. 15.
Born at St. Mary's, Gateshead, Durham, United Kingdom about 1893 to Mathew and Elizabeth Winley; husband of Frances Mary Winley, married in England, date unknown, died 2.8.1972, age 78, sleeping here, name not listed on Find a Grave, Sandgate Cemetery, Harry enlisted on the 27th August 1914 with the 2nd Battalion at Randwick, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board Transport A23 Suffolk on the 18th October 1914.
Admitted to hospital 12.6.1915 (influenza, slight), 30.10.1915 (eczema), 10.7.1917 (knee synovitis), 18.7.1918 (scabies).
Granted leave to England from 26.10.1917 to 13.11.1917 and 25.8.1918 to 10.9.1918.
Granted 75 days paid leave in England (Special 1914 Leave) from the 9.1.1919.
Granted indefinite leave from 27.11.1919.
Commenced return to Australia 1.6.1920.
Harry did not arrived home until the 18th July 1920 with wife Frances and two children, being discharged on the 3rd August 1920.
Mr. Winley’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.
I have placed poppies at Harry’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
