Timothy Charles Foley
Tim ( our grandpa) left his occupation as Engine cleaner for Victorian Railways and his home in Tooradin, Victoria. He was 20 years and 2 months when he embarked on the Wandilla on 6th June 1916. His rank was as a Private and he joined the 2nd Pioneer Battalion, Reinforcement 3. He was bound to serve at the Western Front.
On 14th April 1918, two days before his 22nd birthday, he was wounded in action being gassed and was admitted into the Abbeville Military Hospital- France. He was then transferred (5 days later) to the General Military Hospital Colchester in England. This injury impacted his neck and arm and he was later returned to Australia 1st April 1919 as an invalid. Tim was discharged 17th August 1920.
Two years later, Tim married Phyllis Lydia Palmer and commenced raising 4 children. Tim continued to work for the Victorian Railways as an engine driver and after raising the kids in Coburg, he and Grandma resettled in Murrumbeena.
Retirement went well with cold southern winters spent in the warmth of Queensland. However, in 1976 Grandpa lost his wife and companion and was now very much affected by the constant pain of arthritis. Suddenly, at 85 years of age and after a post surgical complication, Grandpa joined Grandma.
Wish he could have seen his Swans in 2005 and 2012. Perhaps he did?
