Son of Edward Gilchrist and Mary Gilchrist nee Jorgensen of Neetherby, QLD. Brother of Henery Edward Gilchrist who returned to Australia on 8 September 1919 having served with the 9th Battalion

On 15 December 1920 Arthur married Jeannie Smith Tosh in QLD

Commenced return to Australia 6 June 1918 aboard HT Barambah disembarking on the 31 July 1918 at Melbourne for overland travel to Brisbane
