Biography

"...4293 Private Albert Richmond Smith, 7th Battalion, of Pascoe Vale, Vic. Pte Smith enlisted on 27 July 1915 and embarked aboard HMAT Demosthenes on 29 December 1915. On 29 August 1916 he died in England as a result of wounds sustained at Pozieres in France." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)

Died on this date - 29th August.......Albert Richmond Smith was born at Milawa via Wangaratta.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 27th July, 1915 stating he was aged 21 (actual age around 18).

Private Albert Richmond Smith, Service number 4293, joined 7th Battalion in France on 17th June, 1916.

He was wounded in action between 22-25th July, 1916 with gunshot wounds to face & shoulder.
According to information supplied by Mrs Ellen Smith, mother of Albert Richmond Smith, for the Roll of Honour “though severely wounded himself his main artery in neck being shot through, he refused to be put on a stretcher till his comrade who was wounded was taken first.”

Private Smith was invalided to England & admitted to Rusthall V.A.D. Hospital, Tunbridge Wells, England. It was reported on 27th August, 1916 that he was not expected to live.

Private Albert Richmond Smith died at 10.45 am on 29th August, 1916 from wounds received in action in France – died of Secondary Haemorrhage – shrapnel wounds to neck causing severed artery.

He was buried in St. Paul’s Churchyard, Rusthall, Kent, England.
