Today it is with deep respect that I come to pay tribute to Private number 2374 Cyril Pendlebury Wilkinson to commemorate the day of his death.🌺🇦🇺

Cyril Pendlebury Wilkinson was born in 1891 in Jamestown, South Australia and he was the son of James and Mercy Wilkinson and lived at 64 Frederick Street, Unley and before the war, Cyril worked as a storekeeper.

Enlisted in the AIF on February 15, 1916 at the age of 24, he embarked with his unit on August 28, 1916 from Adelaide, South Australia on board HMAT A68 Anchises.

Disembarked at Plymouth, England, October 11, 1916, Cyril received his training at Codford. On January 28, 1916 he embarked with his unit aboard the Princess Clementine at Folkestone and he arrived in Etaples, France on January 29, 1916 and was directed to the Somme front.

In the Somme, Cyril fought in the 48th Australian infantry battalion, 5th reinforcement.On february 20, 1917 at 8pm at Flers, Somme, while in a trench, during an artillery bombardment, Cyril was seriously wounded by a shrapnel in the neck and he died of his wounds four hours later , he was 25.

Today, Cyril Pendlebury Wilkinson rests in peace with his comrades at the AIF Burial Ground at Flers, Somme.

Thank you Cyril, today we remember you with respect and gratitude, we will never forget who you were and all that you did, you gave your life for us, to allow us to have a better life , I feel great respect and great and deep admiration for what you and all men of your generation have done for us and it is an honor to be here for you today.
