Ernest William Dingwall was the eldest son of a banker with the Bank of Scotland, William McDonald Dingwall of Dingwall in Scotland. His mother was Isabella and Ernest was born in Inverness, Scotland during 1896. He was educated at the Royal Academy Inverness and George Watson’s College, Edinburgh. He went to Australia on the 15 May 1913, just prior to his 17th birthday. Ernest was working on a farm at Glen Innes in NSW when he enlisted.
He was sent to Gallipoli during August 1915 and survived the fighting only to fall ill with cerebro spinal meningitis during November 1915. dying in hospital on Lemnos Island, Greece.
