Private Matthew Frederick Hampson enlisted in the AIF originally in early 1916, then asked in July 1916 for a discharge due to his ill health, and the ill health of his wife and children.He re-enlisted on 26.10.1916, and was sent to France as part of the 12th Reinforcements, 31st Infantry Battalion in July 1917.

Pte Hampson was listed as killed in action in the field killed on the 11 October 1917 at Passchendaele Ridge, Belgium. He is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial In Ypres, Flanders, and also in the Commemorative area of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.
