Son of Theodore Joseph Vivian and Mary E. Vivian of Jetty Street, Grange, SA formerly of Broken Hill, NSW.

Prior to enlisted Archibald was apprenticed to Hussey & Gillingham, Printers, Bookbinders & Stationer of Currie Street, Adelaide SA several years.

Commenced return to Australia on 24 January 1919 aboard HT Delta disembarking on 5 March 1919
