William Brett was the licensee of the Hotel Augusta when he died on August 3, 1935. Born in Wilmington, he went to Port Augusta in 1901, and entered the employ of storekeepers, Young and Gordon Limited. He was later in the staff at the opening of the branch in the early days of Iron Knob. He was appointed manager of the Port Augusta West branch of that firm in 1907. In 1916 he joined the 10th Battalion and sailed for France. On his return from the front, he undertook the management of the hotel at Iron Knob before returning to Port Augusta West to join Mr L.R. Barber in the motor industry as Barber and Brett. In 1925 he married Eileen Bothwell and was the father of father of Mary, Brian & Neill. From 1930 he conducted the Hotel Augusta (formerly Wharf Hotel).
Taking an active interest in the town, he served for many years as councillor for the town of Port Augusta West. He was secretary of the Port Augusta West Racing Club and acted as clerk of scales for The Port Augusta Racing Club. He was secretary of the Northern Polo Association, and a keen supporter of the Port Augusta Football Club. He was also an active member of All Saints Catholic Church and a member of the Sacred Heart Sodality, officers of which acted as pallbearers. The town council adjourned for three minutes as a mark of respect.
