105 years ago today, on the 31st March 1918, Lance Corporal Joseph Miller Stubbs, referred to as Bull and Joss, 34th Battalion (Reg No-2165), labourer (Newcastle Steelworks, B.H.P.), from Webster Street, Hamilton, New South Wales, was Killed in Action near Cachy, France by enemy shell fire, age 31.

Born at Wallsend, New South Wales on the 12th January 1887 to Robert Snr (died 23.11.1909, age 69, buried at Teralba Pioneer Cemetery , Sandgate Cemetery database records that Robert was buried on the 25.9.1924, no funeral notice located) and Isabella Stubbs nee Miller (died 31.3.1929, age 82) of 63 Cameron Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 11 Hudson Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and "Cachy", 33 or 63 Donald Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and 118 Kings Road, Adamstown, N.S.W., Bull enlisted March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A68 Anchises on the 24th August 1916.
Admitted to hospital 23.3.1917 (tracheitis - inflammation in the mucous membrane of the trachea), 14.7.1917 (laryngitis).

Wounded in action - 11.6.1917 (exhaustion, shell shock - neurasthenia, Battle of Messines).

Bull is resting at Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, France. Plot I Row A Grave 8.

Mr. Stubbs’s name has been inscribed on the Dunedoo District Honour Roll, Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial, Hamilton Methodist Church & Sunday School Roll of Honour, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Teralba Public School Roll of Honour and the Teralba Soldiers' Memorial.

Place of Association – Teralba, New South Wales, Australia.

There is no memorial inscription on the gravesite plaque for the Stubbs family to tell us of the loss of their son during The Great War, so November 2021 I erected a Memorial cross adorned with poppies in remembrance of Bull’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) I SW. 16.

Younger brother Robert Jnr (born Wallsend, New South Wales 15.9.1889, loco fireman from Cameron Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and Queen Street, Warners Bay, N.S.W., enlisted 16.1.1916, 34th Battalion, Reg No-1465, RTA 28.6.1919, service records does not record sickness or wounding's, service record states Died after Discharge, 30.9.1954, ashes interred Beresfield Crematorium, N.S.W., Plaque in New South Wales Garden of Remembrance
