John Ambrose McGree enlisted 26th August 1915, just a fortnight after his older brother, 10/1586 Private Patrick Joseph Mcgree of the NZ Wellington Rifles, was reported missing during the heavy fighting at Chunuk Bair Ridge, Gallipoli, on the 8 August 1915.

John left Australia on the 30th December 1915 and joined the 1st Battalion AIF in France during June 1916. During the attack on Pozieres by the 1st Division McGree was mortally wounded in the back and chest on or about the 22nd July 1916. John Ambrose McGree died of wounds on the 26th July 1916 and was a buried by a British chaplain in the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension.

A third brother, 8/2076 Private Michael Dennis McGree Otago Regiment, NZEF, was killed in action near Gommecourt Wood, France, 18 July 1918.
