Biography contributed by B Stanleu

A touching scene was witnessed at Gilgandra on Monday last, on the return of Private Walter Potter from the front.

Under a triumphal arch of flags displaying the national colours, all made evident on that occasion, the soldier was met on his return by his mother and father and other very near relations. After receiving their embraces, a venerable and stalwart man addressed him. After he had received the embrace of his mother and father and other very near relations, a few suitable words of welcome were uttered. The soldier on his safe return was complimented, and the kindly wishes expressed for his welfare, and the hope that his future might be brightened.

The scene was heart-stirring among some hundreds of people. The soldier, who had gone away to do his duty, had done it bravely and well. He was presented to us as one who came from the fields and factories, and from all the evidences of prosperity and safety, but he stood there listening and looking manly and modest. He shook hands freely when old friends personally conveyed their welcome to him.

The school children formed into two lines, and through the lane thus formed, gaily decked with flags, the hero of the occasion was driven off in a motor car, the children meanwhile coming to the salute in military style.

The function appealed to me as a stranger, and I would be content to know that all our brave lads would be as kindly dealt with as this man coming back to his home on the Castlereagh.
