Add my storyBiography contributed by Stephen Brooks
The son of William and Sarah Jane Newby, of Rocklea, Brisbane, Queensland. He was born in Oldham, Lancashire, and came out to Australia in 1910 with his family, when he was eleven years of age.
William was only eighteen years of age when he enlisted. He joined the 47th Battalion during January 1918 and was involved in the defence of Dernancourt some three months later. He was severely wounded in the legs, probably by shell fire, on the 3 April 1918 and died two days later in a Field Ambulance, at nineteen years of age.
