The son of William Henry and Mary Anne Mitchell of St Marys, Tasmania. James came from a large family, with eight brothers and four sisters.

James enlisted on the same day as his brother, 4344 Pte. Sydney Albert Mitchell in the 12th Battalion. He died during the heaviest fighting at Pozieres, only a month after joining his unit in France. His brother Sydney was three times wounded during the war and returned to Australia in July 1919.

James’ youngest brother, TX3690 Private Harold Douglas Gordon Mitchell 2/40th Battalion was killed in action during the Japanese invasion of Timor during WW2 on 22 February 1942, age 36.
