His widow, Bessie Cumming, lived at 10 Bliss Street, Burnley, Victoria and sometime at 4 Beaumont Avenue, Canterbury, Victoria.

Biography

George Hay CUMMING was born on 8th July, 1879 in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

His parents were James CUMMING and Mary Margaret Mess HAY

He married Bessie SENIOR in 1903 in Victoria - they had 5 children

Bessie Margaret, George Hector, James Joseph, Lavinia Isabella Hay, Ronald Newbery.

He had previous service for 4 years with B Company, 2nd Battalion before he enlisted on 14th July, 1915 with the Australian Army - he was with the 24th Battalion, 5th reinforcements - Unit embarked from Melbourne on the ship Osterley on 29th September, 1915

George was awarded the Military Medal  in June 1917 and was also awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal & the Victory Medal

He was Killed in Action on 5th October, 1918 in France - he is buried in Ramicourt British Cemetery and also honoured on the Australian War Memorial.

Castlemaine soldier Honoured.  3rd March, Private G.H. Cumming who before enlisting for active service was employed at Thompsons Foundry, left for the front in September, 1915 and after being in Egypt for some time was in March, 1916 sent to France.  During a bombing affray in the trenches he was wounded by shrapnel fire and sent to hospital.  On recovering he rejoined his unit and was appointed Corporal.  Since then for Distinguished Service in the trenches he has been promoted to be a Sergeant and awarded the Military Medal.
