1st Australian Division Salvage Company
France 23.8.1917
Sir,
I have the honour to make application for my discharge from the A.I.F. forces on the following grounds: My widowed mother is now left without any sons at home to conduct the management of her property, situated at Donnybrook, Western Australia. I am the only surviving son. Of my two brothers one No. 4569 Pte. G. F. Wood 28th Battn, A.I.F. was killed at Posieres France on August 5th 1916, the other No. 2472 Pte. R. H. Wood, 51st Battalion reported missing on 13th August 1916 now reported "believed killed" also at Posieres. My mother has written me various letters that she has had to employ outside labour, and as she is over 50 years finds that the returns are very unsatisfactory, and that the property is rapidly deteriorating in value. She wishes earnestly for my return to take over management of the property.
I have been 3 years in the A.I.F. forces having been enlisted on the 14th August 1914. I served 5 months in Gallipoli being wounded in August 1915. I have been serving with the 1st Divisional Salvage Company since 24th April 1916. The intervening time being spent with my late battalion the 11th.
