Francis Andrew Lyon was born in the Parish of Strathaven, Scotland in 1885. He was an apprenticed Engineer for 3 years and had previous service for 7 years with Volunteer Scotland 9th H1. Initially, he was a private with service number 7570. In 1913, he married Freda Louise Caroline Schmaddebeck in Beverley. A produce salesman and Presbyterian, he enlisted at Fremantle on the 22.5.1916 aged 31 years 4 months. He was described as being 5 feet 11 inches tall, with 34-36½ inch chest measurement, fresh complexion, grey eyes and fair hair. Next of kin was his wife, Freda Louise Caroline of St Leonards St, Cottesloe. (She returned to Victoria in 1919). Francis was appointed to the 11th Infantry Battalion. On the 16.10.16 he was promoted to Corporal, then Lance Sergeant on 19.1.17 and Sergeant on 1.6.17. He embarked at Fremantle on A30 Borda on the 29.6.17 and served as Voyage Only Sergeant. Upon arrival in England, he reverted to ranks. Francis embarked to France on the 22.1.18. On the 16.3.18 he was sent to hospital, with a fever and he returned to his unit on the 6.4.18. He was again sick and sent to hospital on the 21.6.18, dying on the 29.6.19 of pneumonia. He was buried in Longueness St Omer Souvenir Cemetery VC21 by the Revd J. W. Rose, Chaplain. The effects returned to his wife included his disc, a metal ring, 2 Testaments, notebook, electric torch, nickel pencil case, fountain pen, badge, mirror, razor in case, safety razor and blades in a case, belt, YMCA wallet, button, photos, cards, letters, nail clipper, crucifix, metal chain, coin, and odd papers.
