Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Served and suffered during The Great War, resting in an unmarked grave at Sandgate Cemetery.

89 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 7th June 1932, Private William Jones, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-2429), labourer from Haymarket, Sydney, New South Wales and 38 Denison Street, Carrington, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 58. GENERAL-34A. 7.

Born at Grafton, New South Wales about 1874 to parents’ unknown, William enlisted April 1916 at Bathurst, N.S.W.

Wounded in action - 22.5.1917 (GSW face, right shoulder, legs), 27.9.1917 (SW right arm), 16.8.1918 (GSW right arm, severe), William returned home April 1919, being discharged on the 25th May 1919.

There is no headstone to tell us of Mr Jones’s service and sacrifice for his country, so April 2019 I placed a cross adorned with poppies at the gravesite to restore some honour and dignity.

I submitted an application to DVA May 2019 asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque, curbing and marble chip, but unfortunately this was declined July 2019.

A Plaque shall be installed at the gravesite courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project.
Lest We Forget.
