From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery

Awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
104 years ago today, on the 20th February 1917, Private Albert Gooch, 34th Battalion (Reg No-1824), butcher from "Summerville", Broke, New South Wales, died of wounds, age 19 years, 9 months.

Born at Randwick, New South Wales on the 18th May 1897 as Arthur E to Robert Samuel (died 1918) and Mary Alice (died 1939) Gooch of 1 James Street, Hamilton, New South Wales and 20 Everton Street, Hamilton, N.S.W., Albert enlisted March 1916 at West Maitland, N.S.W., stating his age to be 23 years 9 months, actual age 18 years 9 months.

Albert’s name has been inscribed on the Hamilton (Gregson Park) War Memorial (photos, unveiled on the 20th May 1922, 634 names now inscribed, 98 Fallen), Hamilton St. Peter's Anglican Church Honor Roll, Hamilton Municipal District Roll of Honor, Hamilton Memorial Trees and the Singleton War Memorial.
Albert’s name had not been memorialised on his parent’s headstone at Sandgate Cemetery, and unfortunately was not inscribed when the gravesite was restored. ANGLICAN 1-66. 61.

So, February 2018 I placed a memorial cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the memorialised grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.

Lest We Forget.
