Son of Frederick John Chaffer and Martha Chaffer of Undercliffe Road, Undercliffe, NSW. Brother of Henry Charles Chaffer who returned to Australia on 15 October 1919 having served with the 1st Machine Gun Company

Commenced return to Australia on 18 December 1919 aboard HT Konigin Luise disembarking on 7 February 1920
